BEM description

The BEM machine is an advanced Brushless Synchronous Wound-Rotor Doubly-Fed electric motor or generator system that symmetrically motors and generates with four intrinsically unique attributes that improve efficiency, power density and cost over all other electric machine systems, including permanent magnet machines.
The BEM is the only electric machine with rotor real-estate actively participating in the energy conversion process. It is the only electric machine with constant-torque speed range to twice synchronous speed for a given pole-pair count, voltage and frequency of operation (i.e., 7200 rpm with 2 poles @ 60hz versus 3600 rpm for all other electric machines):
It is the only electric machine with a dual-ported (i.e., symmetrical) transformer circuit topology. Accordingly, very high torque current (and torque) is achievable without core saturation, inductive reactance effect, misalignment of rotating fields, or permanent magnet damage.
The BEM is the only electric machine that controls less than half the system power for full system power control.
The BEM is a transformational technology that surpasses the cost-performance of all other electric machine systems, including permanent magnet (PM) machines. This is important as PM machines are considered to be today’s most efficient electric machines. The electric vehicle market, hydro and wind turbine industries, CSP, off grid village generating stations, biogas and geothermal generating stations are targeted markets.
