energy positive solutions

Terraintegra describes a technology as being energy positive when, taking all relevant factors into account, the energy output does not deplete planet resources or increase planet stress. A biofuel like ethanol may not be energy positive if it consumes fossil fuels when growing raw materials, diverts land from food production, spreads nitrogens into water systems, consumes non renewable water resources, pollutes air, land and water during the growing of its raw materials, uses fossil fuels to transport raw materials to plant, uses fossil fuels during the manufacturing process, uses fossil fuels during distribution (ethanol cannot be piped) and releases ozone during storage (low vapourisation temperature) all of which together exceed the energy and environmental benefit of the actual ethanol fuel.
