Alternative fuels replace some fossil fuels in our transport system. Bio-fuels are ethanol, biodiesel, biogas and others. They use fossil energy in their production, contribute to carbon footprint and require vast land areas and water to grow raw materials. Their true energy benefits are questionable. Perhaps a cul de sac, they are a public face of the alternative energy sector and have delayed the inevitable move to an electrically driven transport system Their role will be better served in a new electric transport system with biofuels providing on board vehicle range extending electrical generation to feed batteries and motors.
